Visiting Yogyakarta will be complete only if you have touched the public spaces that have been the centers for young people to hang around and to make friend. There, you can see various activities done by the citizens, enjoy the jathilan performance and try special cuisines.

One of the interesting places to visit is the Boulevard of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) that is located in the forefront of the university. For tens of years, this place has been the space to perform activities by young people, arts and sports. From morning to evening, this place offers different pulses of life. It happens all the day, from Monday to Sunday.

Afternoon is the right time to visit the place. Usually, many young people use this place to perform break dance or to play skateboard. BMX biker community and the community of motorcylce riders often use this place to meet. While looking at what they are doing, you can enjoy the meals that you can get easily around the area.

You can relax yourself while refreshing your body. On Sundays, this place is used for jogging, cycling and other sports. After doing sports, you can have meals such as Chicken Porridge, typical steam rice from Solo named Nasi Liwet Solo, Chicken curry with rice cake and various beverages.

Other interesting public space to enjoy in the evening is the area in front of Vredeburg Fortress. You can see the street musicians are performing while sitting on the benches provided. At certain occasions, you can see art performances on the hall of Serangan 1 Maret monument, right in front of the benches in the area.

Sate kere sold by Madurese women is worth trying. Only with IDR 2,000, you can enjoy the chicken sate and rice cake that is served on a plate made from banana leaf. If you want to buy souvenir, you can walk a little bit to the north to find the vendors selling T-shirts, bracelet, necklace, and other souvenirs.

In the area, you can see two historical buildings other than Vredeburg Fortress. If you look straight ahead, you will see Gedung Agung that used to be the president palace when the capital of Indonesia was temporarily in Yogyakarta in 1949. On the right hand of the area, there is an old Dutch building that now functions as the central post office.

Similar nuance can also be found when you walk eastwards of Vredeburg area to the Shopping area. There, you can sit while enjoying the night atmosphere decorated with city lamps. Meanwhile, in the afternoon to the evening, you can go to the book shops that is famous for its complete collections. At certain times, you can enjoy the works of Yogyakarta artists that are exhibited in an art gallery close to the place.
