Soemarso decorates terracotta vases made by him with the elements that are familiar with the life of Javanese people, such as bamboo, banana leaves, silver, gold, and hidden treasure.
Yogyakarta has many terracotta craftsmen, but only a few who have philosophic characteristics in their works. One of the few craftsmen is Soemarso. The characteristics can be easily seen if we pay close attention to Soemarso's terracotta vases.
Javanese houses in the past which are made of plaited bamboo have inspired Soemarso to make terracotta vase with the finishing resembling the plaited bamboo. The life of the people in Kotagede (which is known as the village of silver craftsmen) becomes the source of idea to make terracotta vase with silver or gold colour.
It is not easy to make those terracotta vases. It needs knowledge and long experiment to find the technique of mixing fit colours. The knowledge is bequeathed by Mr. Soemarso to his son who is now continuing and developing the handicraft business. If you want to see all of our products or you want to learn how to make terracotta vase, the door of our showroom is always wide open.
