5 Things No One Tells You about Cheap Car Rental in Yogyakarta
Updated on 21 February 2019
1. Lots Of Tourist Attractions Are Not As Close As You Thought They Were
Uber had left Southeast Asia, but fortunately Indonesia still has other app-based taxis such as Grab and Go-Car. These online taxis are more affordable and more convenient for short routes (airport - hotel or hotel - mall) and one-way trips. The problem lies in the many tourists' lack of knowledge when it comes to the distance they have to travel to get to some tourist attractions-some of which are situated outside of the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The fare will certainly soar high if you're using online taxis for traveling around.
Borobudur Temple is 40 km away from Malioboro. A one way trip to Borobudur will cost you about Rp175,000, or Rp350,000 in total if you decide to go home using another online taxi. And, that's just for going to and from 1 tourist destination. If you choose to rent a car, you can enjoy a travel package that includes Borobudur Temple, Merapi Lava Tour, and Prambanan Temple for only Rp400,000. At this price you can get a complete package of car + driver + fuel for 12 hours. That's the best deal you can get!
2. Red Zones Everywhere
Tourists traveling to Jogja on an airplane or train needs to be aware of the fact that the airport, train stations, and bus stations are red zones for online taxis (places where online transportation drivers are forbidden from taking passengers). Tourists must sometimes walk a few hundred meters out of the red zones while dragging heavy luggage. This is of course very bothersome for tourists traveling with a pregnant woman, babies/children, or an elderly. This will not be the case if you rent a car in Jogja, as the driver will be waiting to pick you up at the exit. The will gladly help you carry your luggage and more than ready to take you to any places you have in mind.
During the peak season, it is possible that you will find it difficult to order an online taxi due to high demand, traffic jams, or the absence of drivers in the vicinity. How many hours would you have to waste when it happens? You won't have to face such hardship if you choose to rent a car as the driver will stand by, waiting to pick you up at the parking lot. The driver is just one phone call away.
3. You Are Free To Choose A Car For Your Specific Needs
Renting a car means you are free to choose a car that best suits you in terms of type or capacity. Car rentals in Jogja has an extensive range of cars, starting from MPVs like Toyota Avanza and Innova; cars for larger groups like Toyota HiAce or Isuzu Elf; and even luxurious cars such as Hummer 3, Wrangler Rubicon, E Class Mercedes, and Toyota Alphard that will make your travel more classy.
You can even specifically request drivers who do not smoke, fluent in English (Bejo Rent Car, Nice Tour, Absolute Transport, Aisyah Delight Transport, and @Enny-Cipta-Mandiri), or even lady driver (24 Transport).
4. Going The Extra Mile
Years of experience with tourists have given the people working in car-renting business an extra sensitivity toward the tourists' needs. Absolute Transport provides baby car seats at no additional fee for tourists traveling with babies. Bejo Rent Car always prepares raincoats and umbrellas so that its clients wouldn't have to worry about being burned under the sun or soaked in pouring rain. You may find this hard to believe, but Aisyah Delight Transport is willing to take its client to the airport/train station after the day of service for free!
Considering the extra miles these people are willing to go, it is no wonder that the car-renting business in Jogja collected numerous positive reviews.
Aisyah Delight Transport reviewed by som_gc di TripAdvisor
The day we landed Bahtiyar came to pick us up and said that he will be our driver for the whole trip. we were hungry he took us for lunch to a local restaurant by the paddy fields, the food was great and then he helped us to buy Prambanan entry tickets at a discount. For sunset he suggested an alternative to Ratuboku where entry is free and less tourists. We went for that and had a good sunset.
For the rest of the days he provided great service and helping us with his local knowledge to go the best spots and during the best time avoiding the crowds as much as we can. Knowing that we are adventurous about food he took us to restaurants only locals know and made sure we also taste local fruits and snacks like fried grasshopper.
On the last day as promised on his page in Yogyes, he dropped us at the airport for free.
I would highly recommend him.

It was first time traveling to Yogyakarta. I'm glad that we got our driver and car from Bejo car services. The driver can speak fluent English and he makes our trip extremely enjoyable. He is not just a driver, he is also our guide, our translator, our photographer and our friend. We got to explore many different places in Yogyakarta because of him. I'll surely hire my driver again if I go back to Yogyakarta.

5. Don't Be Fooled By Clever And Fun Drivers
Most car rentals in Jogja are owned by kind-hearted, friendly locals. So, don't be fooled if the driver serving you happens to be smart, fun, and fluent in English; he/she might have been no ordinary driver. Consider yourself special or very special to be able to get a chance of going on a ride with the very owner of the car rental. 😉
