Updated on 19 February 2019

Borobudur is actually only 40 kilometers away-equal to 1 hour ride-from Malioboro. However, if you choose to take public transportation, it will take you around 2-3 hours to get there, depending on the departure time and traffic condition.

You can choose either DAMRI buses or regular buses to get to Borobudur Temple. DAMRI (Indonesian state-owned public transit bus company) buses are equipped with AC, while the regular ones are cheaper but come with no AC.

Here's some information on how to get on these public transportations, the fares, operating hours, and the departure schedule from 4 spots + Malioboro:

1. From Adisutjipto International Airport to Borobudur

DAMRI offers a route taking passengers from Adisutjipto Airport to Borobudur. DAMRI buses are categorized as PATAS (cepat dan terbatas/Express), which means that they only stop at the designated spots and are equipped with AC. DAMRI tickets can be purchased at a counter near the northern parking lot of the airport (phone: 0877 3964 8492).

Route:Adisutjipto International Airport - Magelang (passengers will be dropped off at Palbapang T-junction and picked up by a shuttle bus)
Fleet:11-seater Isuzu Elf Microbus with AC
21-seater medium bus with AC
Operational hours:7 am-9 pm

Fleet:27/28-seater non-AC Microbus
Operational hours:5 am-8 pm
Departure schedule:every 30-45 minutes

Not long after arriving at Giwangan Bus Station, the bus will depart to Jombor Bus Station via western Ring Road. Sadly, the seats are narrow and may cause discomfort for those taller than 170 cm. Furthermore, none of the crews speak English.

These buses will stop at Borobudur Terminal Station, located more or less 1.4 km from the temple's entrance. Passengers will have several options: walking for around 20 minutes, using the service of an ojek (motorcycle taxi) for Rp10,000; riding a becak (pedicab) capable of carrying two persons for Rp10,000; or riding a delman (horse cart for four persons) for Rp20,000.

4. From Jombor Bus Station to Borobudur

The buses taking passengers from Terminal Jombor to Borobudur are exactly the same as the ones traveling from Giwangan Bus Station to Borobudur, and therefore they share the same route, armada, operating hours, and departure schedule.

Ticket:Rp20,000 for locals
Rp30,000 for foreign tourists
Trip duration:1 hours

5. From Malioboro to Borobudur

There are no dedicated routes to take passengers from Malioboro to Borobudur. One of the best options is to walk to Tugu Train Station (Tugu Station) and then take a DAMRI bus to Borobudur. However, no buses are scheduled to travel from Tugu Train Station to Borobudur between 8 am and 11 am. During this time frame, passengers' alternative option will be to take a 1A Trans Jogja bus to Adisutjipto International Airport and then a DAMRI bus that will take them to Borobudur with hourly departures from 7 am to 9 pm.

Another alternative available is to take a 3A Trans Jogja bus to Giwangan Bus Station or 2A bus to Jombor Bus Station and then take a regular bus to Borobudur.

The same goes for traveling from Lempuyangan Station and other spots in Jogja. Passengers must go to one of these 4 departure points: Adisutjipto International Airport, Tugu Train Station, Giwangan Bus Station, or Jombor Bus Station.
