Tugu Jogja dibangun oleh Hamengkubuwono I tak lama setelah disepakatinya Perjanjian Giyanti yang isinya membagi dua Kerajaan Mataram menjadi Kasuhunan Surakarta dan Kesultanan Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat. Tugu tersebut mulanya berbentuk golong gilig (bulat+silinder) sebagai simbolisasi menyatunya rakyat dan raja yang bertekad membentuk pemerintahan baru untuk melawan penjajah.
Tahukah anda bahwa Tugu Golong Gilig memiliki tinggi 25 meter sebelum gempa bumi di tahun 1867 merobohkan seluruh bangunannya? Pemerintah Belanda lalu merenovasi Tugu Jogja menjadi bentuk seperti sekarang dengan tinggi 15 meter.

Millions of years ago, the natural process caused the Australian Plate to move beneath the Java Island. This caused the southern part of Java Island to raise and changed the flowing route of the Bengawan Solo River so that it does not pass through Yogyakarta anymore.

WHERE DID THE IRON OF THE KWAI RIVER BRIDGE IN THAILAND COME FROM?
Kwai River Bridge is a famous tourists object in Thailand. The bridge is part of the railway line that connects Thailand with Myanmar. Thousands of forced-labour, including those sent from Java, died during the construction of the bridge. The academy-award-winning movie "The Bridge of River Kwai" which won 7 oscars in 1958 was based on this true event.
Did you know that the Japanese army disassembled the old irons of the railway in Madukismo Sugar Factory in Yogyakarta and brought them to Thailand and used them as the materials to build the bridge?
