Walking along Jl. Gambiran, not far from the very heart of Jogja, you'll see an elegant building with a selembayung ornament on the roof. Step into it, you'll walk pass two stone pillars decorated with Awan Larat motif. Like common Malayan house, Balai Melayu Hotel is adorned with abundant charming carvings with various motifs.

Malayan ambience feels even thicker in a lobby, which also serves as a mini museum. Right next to it, there's a library with thousands of books on Malayan culture. Behind the lobby, there are 2 deluxe rooms, balai terapung (literally translates to 'loating room'), meeting room, garden, and rumah bujang (literally translates to house of bachelor')-a stand-alone building with 2 deluxe rooms.

The upper floor consists of 3 rooms and a spacey living room. Each room is adorned with Malayan interior, with bright colors and songket clothes. One of the most glamor rooms is the Mahligai Seri Maharaja, which is often referred to as the bridal chamber. The interior is dominated by the color yellow, while the bed is decorated with a canopy in golden shade and copper ornaments on the headboard. All furniture and ornaments filling the room bear the luxury of Malayan taste. What guests would often miss is that right above the bridal chamber, there's a mezzanine where, in Malayan tradition, the bride will be kept inside before the wedding ceremony.

Late noon, spend some time to sit back and relax with your significant other in the roof garden. The roof garden has a Malayan-style gazebo where you can spend your time during a romantic evening. Transforming yourselves into a gallant datuk and an elegant datin in Malayan traditional attires while sipping a cup of tea will certainly be a memorable moment. The sweet sound of Malayan music, the sound of dripping water, and the soft breeze will make you carried away.

The next day, take a romantic trip by exploring Jogja on an andong. You can choose from visiting Kotagede or Malioboro, the Yogyakarta Palace (kraton), or the Taman Sari. All of the four places are easily accessible from Balai Melayu Hotel.
